Jamshoro University Takes Stand Against Harassment: Official Removed
In a significant move towards ensuring a safe and respectful work environment, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Dr Arabila Bhutto, has taken decisive action by removing the official, Asif Ali Shar, from his position. This action comes after Mr. Shar was found guilty of violating Section (b) (4) (ii) of the Protection against Harassment of Women Act, 2010, based on the recommendation of the university’s women’s harassment committee.

The investigation into Mr. Shar’s conduct stemmed from complaints filed by adjunct faculty and the warden of the girls’ hostel, alleging harassment. Both the Girls’ Rescue Centre in Jamshoro and the university’s harassment committee conducted thorough probes into the matter. Their reports, submitted on April 15 and April 17 respectively, provided the basis for the Vice Chancellor’s decision to dismiss Mr. Shar from his role. The university has also notified relevant authorities about this decision, including the secretary of Universities and Boards, Directorate of Human Rights, chairmen of Higher Education Commission Islamabad and HEC Sindh, and the DSP of Girls Rescue Centre.
The university’s registrar has issued a notification confirming the dismissal of Mr. Shar, who held the position of deputy director of finance. Sources familiar with the matter revealed that Mr. Shar had been persistently harassing the warden through messages and calls, and had even attempted to coerce her into a hotel outing to force her to be his friend.
